What is a Cappuccino?

A cappuccino is a classic Italian coffee drink made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam (in a 1-1-1 ratio). Known for its balanced flavour and creamy texture, a cappuccino typically starts with a single or double shot of espresso, followed by a layer of steamed milk and topped with a thick, airy milk foam. It’s smaller and stronger in taste than a latte, with a smooth mouthfeel and bold coffee presence.

How to make a Cappuccino

To make a cappuccino, start by brewing a shot of espresso. Steam milk until it becomes velvety and slightly foamy, then pour it over the espresso. Finish by spooning a layer of thick milk foam on top. The classic ratio is 1:1:1—equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. You can prepare it using an espresso machine with a steam wand or a milk frother at home for a café-quality experience.

Start with a shot of espresso. We recommend the intense L’OR Espresso Forza or the spicy L’OR Espresso Supremo as a basis for your cappuccino. Follow the three steps below to create the perfect cappuccino at home.

Cappuccino recipe - step by step

Start with a shot of espresso. We recommend the intense L’OR Espresso Forza or the spicy L’OR Espresso Supremo as a basis for your cappuccino. Follow the three steps below to create the perfect cappuccino at home.

  1. 1

Pour the espresso in a cappuccino cup.

  2. 2

Froth milk, either by using an electric milk frother or frothing wand.

  3. 3

Add the frothed milk gently to the espresso. The steamed milk will go in first, followed by the milk foam.

How to froth milk?

There are many options to get soft, foamy milk to top off your cappuccino. The easiest way is to invest in a milk frother. Simply pour in some cold milk into the frother and press the button. Your milk foam will be ready within a minute.

Do you have a frothing wand or a handheld milk frother? Make sure to warm your milk first to create warm milk foam.

1. Hold the wand vertically and make sure the head is fully submerged into the milk.

2. Turn the frother on. Swirl in circles for about 30 seconds.

3. After that, move the wand slowly up and down to create even more foamier milk. Don’t forget to keep the head inserted in the milk.

4. After 30 seconds, turn the frothing wand off and remove from the milk. Your milk foam is now ready.

How to make a heart in a Cappuccino?

Making a cappuccino for someone special? Get creative and make a heart in the milk foam in 5 steps:

1. Froth 3 ounces of whole milk. Swirl the milk foam to get red of any bubbles.

2. Pour a shot of espresso into a cappuccino cup. Hold the cup in a 45-degree angle towards you.

3. Take the milk foam and gently pour the milk into your cup, starting in the middle of the espresso.

4. To create the heart, you’ll have to pour closer to the top when the cup is almost full. Start moving your hand back and forth to create ripples in the milk foam.

5. Drag a line down, right through the centre of the heart to finish the heart.

6. Your heart is now ready! Didn’t succeed? Try the simple version. Get some cacao and a cappuccino stencil. Create a heart by sprinkling cacao on top of the milk foam.

The main difference between a latte and a cappuccino is the ratio of milk to foam. A latte contains more steamed milk and just a thin layer of milk foam, giving it a creamier texture and milder coffee flavour. A cappuccino, on the other hand, has equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam, resulting in a stronger coffee flavour with a lighter, airier texture on top.

In Italian tradition, cappuccino is considered a morning drink because of its high milk content, which is thought to be heavy on the stomach later in the day. It’s typically enjoyed at breakfast to provide a creamy, energizing start—often paired with a pastry. Many Italians avoid milk-based coffee drinks after about 11 a.m.

A cappuccino contains three equal parts:

Espresso – a strong shot of coffee

Steamed milk – gently heated, not overly frothy

Milk foam – light and airy, topping the drink

Some variations may include a sprinkle of cocoa powder or cinnamon on top.

Traditionally, the espresso (coffee) goes in the cup first, followed by steamed milk, and finally the milk foam on top. This layering helps balance the flavours and textures.

The classic cappuccino uses a 1:1:1 ratio:

1 part espresso

1 part steamed milk

1 part milk foam

This balanced ratio creates a rich yet airy coffee experience.
